Abstract:
Crystals of transition metal oxides are produced
and characterized for various subprojects of the Sfb. As the important role
of defects for catalytic processes is well established, detailed knowledge of
type and density of defects shall be gained by ultrasound methods. Activities
of this project will include the preparation of vanadiumoxide single crystals
with characterized and 'tuned' defect-density and the preparation of other oxide
crystals.
The concentration of experimental subprojects on a single source for crystal
samples, is a prerequisite for the comparability of the results.
Investigations of single crystalline samples supplement experiments with thin
films since crystals represent, on the one hand, the purest realization of ordered
solid state structures and therefore serve as reference for results on possibly
strained thin film samples, and on the other hand single crystals allow in principle
for the preparation of crystallographic cuts which are not accessible via film-growth.
